I remember being 16 and thinking that one day I would have a house and that I’d then have all the space I could possibly need.
You go from living in a small room in your parent’s home, to living in a small dorm at a college, to living in the smallest apartment that money can buy once you find work. But then you grow up and you finally earn enough to buy an actual house with multiple rooms and a front drive.
And you think that finally you’ll have enough space for all the things you want. You can finally build that home gym, store that collection of books and throw huge parties where everyone has a place to stay for the night!
But then reality sets in. Most of us are not going to be affording houses with more than four rooms. And most of us will have children on the way shortly after buying our home. That then gives us just one or two rooms free to do with as we like. If one is a spare room and one is a home office, then you’re going to have to kiss goodbye to that home gym!
And what about hosting guests? One spare room isn’t really enough to have big parties. And if you have a three bedroom house and two kids, then you might not even have one room for someone to stay!
That’s why I’ve been researching alternative options. I’ve found a few great alternatives to a spare room with a futon and these should be suitable to help out in a variety of different situations.
One of the very best options I’ve found is the LUCID 4 Inch Folding Mattress…
This folding mattress is a folding bed that can help you to host guests but also to enjoy your home in a variety of others ways. Put simply, this is one of the most versatile and convenient solutions I’ve seen in a long time and it’s also particularly well made and even quite attractive.
Essentially, this is a foam mattress that can fold into a chair for comfortable seating or a guest mattress. That guest mattress is thin enough but wide enough to be laid out flat on the floor for you to sit on (or for kids to use as a play mat) but it’s also large enough to offer a very good night’s sleep for one or two guests.
As a sofa, this product looks particularly clean and modern. It doesn’t take up much space and it’s considerably cheaper than investing in a full-blown futon.
This mattress measures 54x75x4” and when folded, it is as small as 26.75”x54”x12”. It can conceivable be kept on a wardrobe or behind another sofa if you lay the backrest flat and it also has a useful carry handle that will be ideal if you choose to take it on a trip. A removable washable cover also makes this a particularly family-friendly option for your home.
When compared with an air mattress, this folding foam mattress provides a unique set of features. Of course it won’t go down quite as flat or compact as an air mattress as there is no way to deflate and remove the filling as you would do with an air bed. Likewise, it also offers a little less support and a little less bounce compared with an air mattress, so you might find yourself closer to the ground.
But on the other hand, this bed looks much nicer than an air mattress and feels more like a permanent fixture in your home. It also doesn’t run any risk of getting punctures and is much quicker to set-up as it doesn’t need inflating. It’s also very easy to move around and all these features make it great for kids.
If you have children and you want to turn one of those rooms into a spare room when needed, then this is a particularly smart solution that will do that just nicely.
Customer reviews for this product are particularly positive. Users are generally very impressed with the look and the quality of the product. One reviewer described using it to create an Asian style room with low, Japanese floor futons. Another user found it very useful as a replacement mattress for their camper van.
On the whole, it seems that users like the versatility and have used it in a variety of ways. They also generally report it being very comfortable. One reviewer was keen to point out that it wasn’t memory foam however, while another found it slightly bulky for packing in the car. Overall though, the reviews are outstandingly positive.
You can buy this foam mattress on Amazon for just under $135 at the time of writing, which is down from around $200. You are getting what you pay for here though, as the product is clearly of a high quality.
There are also a variety of different sizes, all the way up to king size. The king is normally around $320 but at the time of writing has a 44% discount on. There’s also free shipping and a money-back guarantee for 30 days so you can test out the product.
On the whole, this is a particularly well made alternative to a futon or an air bed. It is very comfortable, very practical thanks to its easy ability to fold down and also a very nice looking addition to a child’s room or perhaps a room with a minimal and modern décor.
You’ll need to decide for yourself if this is a better choice for you than an air bed. If so though, this is one of the best foam mattresses out there for the money.
